Some lack self confidence. Others have had bad experience by being recruited by a newbie that had no idea what they were doing. Many people wrongly associate network marketing with a sales job. For the most part the two marketing programs (sales and MLM) are two different animals. For many people the real fear is sales. If they only knew that MLM is more closely related to teaching than sales.

People are sometimes afraid of what they are not familiar with. MLM is relatively new to most, and although it is an excellent business module, it may seem “too good to be true.” There are many companies that have excellent reputations and simply provide high quality products and reasonable prices because they don’t have to spend money on advertising, retailing or wholesalers. I work with Arbonne, and because our advertising is word of mouth, I make that money as a consultant. Its a great business plan. More and more people will enjoy MLM in the future. Change takes time :)

Much of the rejection and negative resonses to MLM are due to either lack of understanding the concept or knowing someone (or experiencing) a bad experience with a certain company or sponsor.

Many fear MLM due to the fact that it requires stepping out of the “comfort zone” that they have become so accustomed to in their life. Many people have a fear of what they aren’t familiar with, mostly due to fear of failure. Some are so afraid of ideas that are new to them that they are unwilling to even learn about them. They had rather just presume that these things are scams than to open their minds and learn what it is all about.

I fully agree with Via! MLM is more about sharing your knowledge with others than selling. It is very much a people business. It is about helping others realize their dreams and goals, training them correctly and setting a good example for your team members. As with any business, it is not something that requires any specific talent. It is a learned trait and if you are willing to learn, you can do MLM.

I have over 20 years experience in MLM business and although there are some bad companies that make profits next to impossible, if you know how to understand the compensation plan and evaluate the commissions, training, start-up costs and company support, you will find that there are some excellent companies out there. Not necessarily the oldest companies either because a lot has been learned about the structuring the compensation plan since the senior companies began.

I started over 20 years ago with one of the oldest and found that the retail profits and compensation plan was less than desirable once I understood how it worked. Now that I have found the right company, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. That is why I spend a lot of time helping others learn how to find the right opportunity so that they can avoid many of the mistakes that I made through my learning stages. Some of those mistakes were very costly.

I have created several instructional pages on my Hub pages that help you learn how to avoid those online scams by teaching you how to look for the right opportunity. It is important to know what to look for and what to avoid when considering joining any company.

Anyone who would like to learn what it is all about and learn how to find the right opportunity is welcome to visit the Hub link in my YA profile. There has never been nor will there ever be a charge for this information from me. I give it freely to anyone who is in need of assistance.

It is my hope that one day people become more open to learning about this type of opportunity and realize the success that is available to them. There are 10 million people in MLM business opportunities and is is becoming the fastest growing business concept avaliable today. If thomas Edison had listened to all the negative responses in his life we may all still be in the dark today! Everything is impossible until somebody does it!

I agree with bonnieram1962.

It is usually fear of the unknown and/or lack of understanding that gives it a multi-level marketing a bad rap.

You can learn more about what it is and isn’t here:

I earn residual income from several sources, and network marketing is just one of those sources- in fact i am the top earner in one of the companies I am involved with.

Likely one of the reasons people have bad feeling about mlm is they always know of someone who didn’t so well with it.

#1 reason for failure is inactivity. Who is to blame for that?

#2 reason- not working the business utilizing automation and running out of time, money and enthusiasm.

That is preventable:

I think it’s like being a manager in any other company out there. If you’re a good manager with a good product or service & you train and support your staff well, they’ll feel good about themselves and perform well and you are paid accordingly.

Being successful in mlm isn’t about signing up everyone everywhere, it’s about supporting everyone you sign up. I’ve been involved in Direct Sales mlm for over 13 years. I’m making a tremendous income by mentoring people to have their own successful direct sales businesses - the bottom line is, I make money because THEY make money, and there’s nothing wrong with that!! It’s about having a great product to sell, where people can generate a good income soley from the sale of the product, and people who choose to can make a GREAT income by helping others do the above.

Not everyone will get it, though …. like everything in life, opinions are formed based on experience (or lack thereof!)

Well, if you dont mind ripping people off then you shouldnt mind being in MLM.

MLM and Network Marketing have the FTC right on top of them right now for a good reason.

Ill just give you a few first hand experiences.

I was on a conference call with a presidential, now this person would use everything from “Spiritual guidance” to manipulating wisdom to get people in her downline to spend money to raise her volume.

Using terms like “it takes money to make money” or even stepping down to “well if you invest here then the universe will return it to you ten fold.”

Another example is this same woman exemplified a person who sold their living room furniture to be at some meeting she was hosting as some level of leadership.

Now honestly, thats a level of ignorance, because the truth is, the person didnt have the money to be in business, sold the only thing they had left to go to this stupid meeting and now they are broke and this Presidential has her money.

The person is no longer in the business.

I know first hand that network marketers train in deceptive practices, hell I can pull up old “Training cd’s” and quote them for you.

And the only way you are going to make any money in that industry is if you dont mind being deceptive to people and you dont mind giving them bad advice when good advice wont make YOU any money.

I was with Nuskin. Its pretty shady.

IM actually glad that the FTC is looking deep into network marketing and mlm with the New Business Opportunity Proposal as to require certified documentation to give to people so that people can make a sound decision before investing their money in an MLM scam.

Their style of recruiting is Frowned upon by the recruiting and staffing industry and referred to as “Cattle Calling” because it just pulls whatever out of the wood work to see what they can get out of whoever is willing to put the money into their scam.

I can go on and on and on, but its not fear of network marketing, and I would like to see documentation of the money that you make, because I also know that network marketers are trained to say they are making money when they are not.

Its used as a recruiting tool, more deception.
